As Binti, a mathematically brilliant, 16 year old member of the African Himba tribe, sneaks away from her home in the dead of night, I felt almost as much anticipation as Binti herself. Binti has decided, against massive family pressure, to accept a full-ride scholarship to the renowned Oomza University on a planet named ― wait for it ― Oomza Uni.

The 2019 Hugo Awards will be presented at Worldcon 77 in Dublin, Ireland, on August 18. The Hugo Award finalists are chosen by readers who are voting members of Worldcon. This week we’ll talk about the novels and novellas. We discussed other categories in previous columns.

Plenty of fun new books on the docket this week!

Bill: This week I read two solid middle-of-the-road fantasies: Gates of Stone by Angus Macallan and Early Riser by Jasper Fforde. On audio I finally finished Behave: The Biology of Humans at Our Best and Our Worst by Robert M. Sapolsky, which I’m putting on my best of 2018 list retroactively — so good I bought the Kindle version in addition to the Audible version so I can reread it and take/save notes.

Bill: This week I read Jenn Lyons’ solid The Ruin of Kings, Ian Cameron Esslemont’s satisfactorily concluding Malazan prequel book Kellanved’s Reach, and Gareth Hinds’ excellent graphic story version of The Iliad.

Jana: This week I got to the halfway mark in S.A. Cha kra borty‘s City of Brass (and am still thoroughly enjoying it) and finished both Jordanna Max Brodsky‘s The Wolf in the Whale and Jessie Mihalik’s Polaris Rising.

Sunday Status Update: January 27, 2019

More good books this week!

Bill: This week I read Guy Gavriel Kay’s newest, A Brightness Long Ago, which was a typical Kay novel — graceful writing, moving moments, thoughtful elegies on memory and history. Man’s a master craftsperson. That arrival put on hold for a night my reading of the Binti omnibus by Nnedi Okorafor, which I’m just about done with. Which was fine with me as I’m mostly befuddled by the acclaim; clearly I’m the outlier on this one.

Thoughtful Thursday: 2018 Hugo Awards: Novels & Novellas

Lots of our favorites are included among the finalists for this year’s Hugos for Best Novel and Best Novella. Will the “sure things” win? Will Ann Leckie or Yoon Ha Lee pull off an upset?

Not surprisingly, the novella category has the tried-and-true, like Nnedi Okorafor and Seanan McGuire, along with relative newcomers like Sarah Gailey. And the Tor.com novella imprint is well represented in that category!

Obituary:

Harlan Ellison, who changed the landscape of speculative fiction with works like “I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream,” and “Repent, Harlequin, Said the Ticktockman,” passed away last week at the age of 84. Tor.com looks back on his life and influence. Locus does too.

The Locus Weekend will be held in Seattle, Washington, on June 22-24, 2018.
