On this day in 2008, the Large Hadron Collider was powered up in Geneva, Switzerland, and proton beams circulated in the main ring.

Movies and Television:

A new live-action Peter Pan is coming to the small screen this fall. Allison Williams of GIRLS (and news anchor Brian Williams’ daughter) will continue the tradition of women who have played the spritely boy. Check out some of the first photos of Williams as Pan.

A new animated film, Hullabaloo, is being funded by IndieGoGo. It’s described as Disney-meets-steampunk, and the concept art is beautiful. Check it out.

Bill Murray was interviewed recently and asked who his top choices would be for a female Ghostbusters cast. I like his picks, especially Kristen Wiig.

Internet Stuff:

Here’s a Pinterest board of 90’s fantasy book covers. Yep, this recalls my teenage years scouring the racks of used book stores.

What does a black hole do when it dies? Well, it doesn’t really die.

Slate published this article about alien languages, specifically discussing why, in science fiction, aliens seem to have so few languages while we here on earth have thousands?

Artist Feature:

Elisabetta Trevisan has been one of my favorite artists ever since I stumbled across a pack of tarot cards that she designed. Something about the colors and shapes she uses evokes stained glass, while the figures are very classical. I chose these three paintings today because I’m writing something about the sea, and these are my background for inspiration.

  • Kate Lechler

KATE LECHLER, on our staff from May 2014 to January 2017, resides in Oxford, MS, where she divides her time between teaching early British literature at the University of Mississippi, writing fiction, and throwing the tennis ball for her insatiable terrier, Sam. She loves speculative fiction because of what it tells us about our past, present, and future. She particularly enjoys re-imagined fairy tales and myths, fabulism, magical realism, urban fantasy, and the New Weird. Just as in real life, she has no time for melodramatic protagonists with no sense of humor. The movie she quotes most often is Jurassic Park, and the TV show she obsessively re-watches (much to the chagrin of her husband) is Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
