RUTH ARNELL (on FanLit's staff January 2009 — August 2013) earned a Ph.D. in political science and is a college professor in Idaho. From a young age she has maxed out her library card the way some people do credit cards. Ruth started reading fantasy with A Wrinkle in Time and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe — books that still occupy an honored spot on her bookshelf today. Ruth and her husband have a young son, but their house is actually presided over by a flame-point Siamese who answers, sometimes, to the name of Griffon.

  1. “Bookish turnoffs” was thought-provoking. Now I want to think about what does it for me. Sometimes I know right away — but I’m curious about the other books that I think I’m enjoying, but somehow I set them down to read something else and never get back to them.

Finally a list that I can say I’ve read or tried most of the authors included. Thanks for the link to the 101 women to read list.

My biggest bookish turnoff, is really bad dialogue. Followed by Energizer Bunny characters that never feel pain or get tired, etc.

  3. Thanks for the “10 Novels That Are More Action-Packed Than Most Summer Movies” list. I added three more books to my TBR list. I was glad to see one of my favorites, Altered Carbon. made the list.

  4. Greg, and I liked the new cover on Altered Carbon (unless that’s a British edition).
