Another year, another round of amazing novels! I can feel myself almost salivating at the delicious, delicious sequels and debuts set to be published this year! Right now I’m envisioning curling up in a comfy chair with a 2016 release and a big plate of cookies… and it’s really distracting…
Anyway, here are the two releases I’m most excited about this year:
1. Daniel Abraham’s The Spider’s War, out March 8, is the conclusion to his acclaimed THE DAGGER AND THE COIN series. I’ve been waiting for this one for two years! Here’s the publishers’s blurb:
The epic conclusion to THE DAGGER AND THE COIN series, perfect for fans of George R.R. Martin. Lord Regent Geder Palliako’s great war has spilled across the world, nation after nation falling before the ancient priesthood and weapon of dragons. But even as conquest follows conquest, the final victory retreats before him like a mirage. Schism and revolt begin to erode the foundations of the empire, and the great conquest threatens to collapse into a permanent conflict of all against all. In Carse, with armies on all borders, Cithrin bel Sarcour, Marcus Wester, and Clara Kalliam are faced with the impossible task of bringing a lasting peace to the world. Their tools: traitors high in the imperial army, the last survivor of the dragon empire, and a financial scheme that is either a revolution or the greatest fraud in the history of the world.
2. Saladin Ahmed’s The Thousand and One, out December 15, is the sequel to his Hugo-nominated Throne of the Crescent Moon and the second installment in his THE CRESCENT MOON KINGDOMS series:
Revolution has come to Dhamsawaat. The Falcon Prince, whose coup had aimed to feed the city’s poor, now sits on the Throne of the Crescent Moon. But he quickly learns that stealing a kingdom is much easier than running one. Doctor Adoulla Makhslood forces himself to ignore the political turmoil boiling around him as he prepares for his long-awaited wedding to Miri Almoussa. His old friends Dawoud and Litaz in turn prepare to travel back to their homeland in the Soo Republic, accompanied by the tribeswoman Zamia Banu Laith Badawi, who hopes to put distance between herself and memories of her dead kinsmen and the warrior dervish Raseed bas Raseed. Meanwhile, Raseed has left Dhamsawaat and his apprenticeship to Adoulla to journey back to the Lodge of God, hoping to purify himself of religious doubts and his troubling attraction to Zamia, and in the course of his journey he crosses swords with the master assassin and disgraced dervish Red Layla. But the heroes’ paths cross again when the enigmatic Queen of the djenn herself appears with a dire warning for the world of men, and Adoulla and his old friends again leave peace and happiness behind as they set out to make things right in a world gone wrong.
What about you? Which 2016 releases are you most looking forward to?
Quite a few, actually.
– put me down for _The Spider’s War_ also
– are we going to get _The Thorn of Emberlain_ this year? If so then that
– Novik’s _League of Dragons_
– Connie Willis’s _Connection_, if it comes out this year, and if it isn’t too SF to count
– the last two volumes of Scott Chantler’s _Three Thieves_
– _Wild Cards XXIII: High Stakes_
– Guy Gavriel Kay’s _Children of Earth and Sky_
Amazon says Thorn of Emberlain will be out on July 16th – I’m waiting for this too! :) I haven’t heard of Connection, Three Thieves, or Wild Cards, so definitely will check those out

Does the final volume in Robin Hobb’s Fitz and the Fool triology come out this year?
According to Goodreads, it comes out on July 14th, 2016! It’s not up on Amazon yet, though.

Ooooohhhh, that Max Gladstone! I love his work :)
Has anyone mentioned City of Blades by Robert Bennett? How about the third Los Nefilim by T Frohock? And (because you’ve been checking) is NK Jemisin’s follow up to The Fifth Season coming out this year? I think everything else I’m hoping for has been mentioned. Maybe. I do agree with your picks, especially Saladin Ahmad’s follow up to Crescent Moon!
Jemisin’s “The Obelisk Gate” (sequel to “The Fifth Season”) is set to be published August 16, 2016 – yay!
Yup, City of Blades was just mentioned. I haven’t heard of Frohock (and it hasn’t been discussed yet) – so I’ll definitely take a look at the Los Hefilim series. Glad you like Ahmed as well:)
Trey’s post wasn’t visible as I was typing mine. Los Nefilim is a series of three novellas, a different take on angels and demons in a past Spain. The third one, The Second Death, comes out this year.
Jemisin’s book is due out in August: http://www.amazon.com/Obelisk-Gate-Broken-Earth/dp/0316229261/ref=as_li_ss_tl?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1453737021&sr=1-1&linkCode=sl1&tag=prettyterrible-20&linkId=9f1a04a0afd6cceb4b1dbee61b226860
At the top of my list is Robert J Sawyer’s “Quantum Night”.
Also looking forward to:
Arkwright by Allen Steele
The Thorn of Emberlain by Scott Lynch
Luna: Wolf Moon by Ian McDonald
Of books not mentioned yet, looking forward to:
Babylon’s Ashes by James S.A. Corey
Morning Star by Pierce Brown
Calamity by Brandon Sanderson
King of Ashes by Raymond Feist
Javelin Rain by Myke Cole
also really looking forward to the conclusion of the Unhewn Throne which has been great so far.
THE LAST MORTAL BOND by Brain Staveley!!!!! :D
You and me both :)
I think I’m looking forward to most of the above. To be honest though my to read list is so long and full of books that are already out and I haven’t gotten to yet, I haven’t really paid much attention to what is coming up. I’m glad to be reminded of some books that I knew were on their way but hadn’t yet checked out their release dates.
I didn’t see Patrick Rothfuss’ Doors of Stone listed – does anyone know if it is slated to be published this year?
Unfortunately, I don’t think “Doors of Stone” is set to be out this year…:'(
Rothfuss is climbing onto that list with Martin and Lynch. The reigning king of that list, though, will probably continue to be Greg Costikyan, who it looks like is simply not going to complete his “Cups & Sorcery” series.
I’m really looking forward to ‘Bands of Morning’ by Brandon Sanders on, ‘The Thorn of Emberton by Scott Lynch; but first up, as it’s out in about four weeks, is ‘A Gathering of Shadows’ by V.E. Schwab. ‘A Darker Shade of Magic was wonderful so I have high hopes for this.

Please contact me (Marion) with your choice and a US address. Happy reading!
I’ve been wondering about the Jemisin book too.
Most of my wants for this year are already listed, but I’m surprised nobody has mentioned Django Wexler, who has two additions to ongoing series this year, The Palace of Glass (Forbidden Library #3)in April and The Guns of Empire (The Shadow Campaigns #4) in August.
My #1, though, is The Spider’s War. Looking forward to wrapping this great series, which incidentally turned me on to The Expanse series by including a free copy of Leviathan Wakes with the first Dagger and the Coin ebook! So Babylon’s Ashes is my #2! Or maybe it’s the other way around? Naw, let’s call it a tie :-)
I haven’t read any of the Leviathan books but I have to admit that THE EXPANSE is so good it’s got me curious now.
Good to hear! Unfortunately I don’t have cable or streaming capability so I’m jonesing to watch it! If you bought an ebook of the first Dagger & The Coin, it may have a bonus Leviathan Wakes at the end!
For anyone who is on the fence about the Expanse and Leviathan Wakes, Robert Thompson and Bill Capossere provide plenty of incentive with their enthusiastic reviews here:

The Spider’s War is at the top of my list, too. Also Babylon’s Ashes.
The one I don’t think was mentioned yet is Burning Midnight by Will McIntosh. It’s his first YA book, but I’ve loved his stuff in the past, so I’ll give it a try anyway. (Besides, I have teenagers to pass it on to.)
I haven’t read any of McIntosh yet, although The Defenders has been on my radar. Burning Midnight looks very inviting, though. Thanks for the tip!
