Next week we’ll look at the other categories!
Going with N.K. Jemisin’s The Stone Sky. Haven’t quite finished it, but the whole story has been told in a beautifully unorthodox way.
I think The Stone Sky, and A River of Teeth ar my favorite choices. Both wonderful, imaginative reads.
They are having an author signing on Sunday afternoon. This is close enough to me, I think I’m going to make a trip to it. :)
Gotta go with Jemisin and Pinsker
I realy enjoyed The Stone Sky by N.K. Jemisin. The whole series was amazing and I think she gave a fulfilling end.
Awards are sure hard to figure out. I’ve only read Six Wakes from the novel list, and that didn’t impress me as being other than “okay”. Any one of Amatka, City of Miracles, and The Gates of Tagmeth would have been much more worthy of recognition. Hoping to pick up Jade City next month, when it comes out in paperback.
Of the novellas I read, Passing Strange and The Black Tides of Heaven were both flawed, and while All Systems Red was certainly fun, it’s hard to think of it as a best of the year candidate. But maybe fun is good enough to win it this year? The not so fun Agents of Dreamland would have been another good addition to the list though.
I think that with such a unique combination of ideas (dinosaurs, nagas, technology, silkpunk bureaucracy), JY Yang’s The Black Tides of Heaven should win an award.
I will go ahead and say that “The Stone Sky” will win an award!
The witty POV writing of The Strange Case of the Alchemist’s Daughter surely deserves an award.
River of Teeth: a perfect example of making fiction out of the truism that real history is stranger than fiction.
I’ve not read any of these though I did attempt two of them and couldn’t finish them for various reasons, mostly characters just not to my liking.
If I had to randomly pick based on synopsis and cover, I’d choose The Strange Case of the Alchemist’s Daughter for novel and All Systems Red for novella.
I haven’t read any of these, but I’ve heard great things about a few. I recently started River of Teeth (well, American Hippo, the combined book), and so far it seems good!
