Marjorie Bowen was born Margaret Gabrielle Vere Campbell Long in 1885, on Hayling Island, Hampshire. She would go on to write over 150 books, primarily historical fiction, but also mystery novels, horror stories, biographies and nonfiction. Bowen passed away in 1952, at the age of 67.

The British publishing firm Sphere Books had a really wonderful thing going for itself back in the 1970s: a series of 45 books, both fiction and nonfiction, curated by the hugely popular English supernatural novelist Dennis Wheatley, and titled Dennis Wheatley’s Library of the Occult. At the tail end of my recent review of D. K. Broster’s Couching at the Door, I mentioned that I so enjoyed this volume of creepy stories that I was minded to immediately begin another book from British publisher Wordsworth Editions’ Tales of Mystery & the Supernatural division … and I’m so glad that I followed through on that!
