No, gentle readers, your eyes are not deceiving you.
This is the cover for the 1975 Ballantine issue of William Goldman‘s classic novel The Princess Bride.
Yes, we are just as offended as you are. It’s INCONCEIVABLE! This horrid cover does not belong on one of our favorite books and, therefore, it needs a new title. Can you help us provide one that’s more appropriate?
KAT HOOPER, who started this site in June 2007, earned a Ph.D. in neuroscience and psychology at Indiana University (Bloomington) and now teaches and conducts brain research at the University of North Florida. Holy cow, that is really horrible. Please pass the brain bleach.
Not a book, but a movie poster; “Le Caux aux Folle, Starring Johnny Depp.” (Because of the dead bird thing.)
So, I’m repulsed but I can’t look away. What is amazing about this is how brilliantly it sets the reader up to be disappointed in this lovely book! Because they bought it expecting, well, the story that goes with *that* cover.
I know, I know! I was thinking the same thing. They buy this (on purpose) and then they get the sweet love story of Buttercup and Westley. What a huge let down!!!
Although, if you read the novel, there’s a lot of cynicism in there that isn’t in the movie. A lot.
(Not this much, admittedly.)
I loved all of the commentary in the book, especially (SPOILER ALERT) the hats and the bald princess.
