In today’s installment of the Shocktober Double Feature, we will encounter a serial knife killer, near nudity, a Parisian blood drainer and Christopher Lee. It’s Violent Midnight and Theatre of Death!
A film probably better known by its alternate, later title of Psychomania, Violent Midnight proved a very pleasant surprise for me indeed. The film centers around Elliott Freeman, a young, reclusive painter who won’t be a free man much longer if the local police have their way. One of Freeman’s pretty young models has just been found knifed to death (the picture’s debt to Hitchcock’s 1960 classic Psycho is fairly evident during her suggested, shadowy slaying), and before long, one of his sister’s co-ed friends follows suit… An independent production more than ably helmed by Richard Hilliard, this film offers any number of unexpected treats. It features beautiful and artfully composed B&W photography; nice visuals of the Stamford, Connecticut countryside; an intriguing, jazzy score; some surprising and titillating near nudity by a good number of comely lasses; and interesting performances by its largely no-name cast. The only performers I was at all familiar with here were Silvia (sic) Miles as a blond bar floozy; TV favorite Dick van Patten as a hard-boiled cop (!); and, in his first film role, James Farentino as a randy thug who can’t seem to help getting in trouble. The actress Lorraine Rogers is also very fine as a blond, aggressively lustful student. The picture concludes quite suspensefully, with the knife-wielding killer stalking a very pretty gal during a thunderstorm. The killer’s identity comes waaaaaay out of left field, I must say; don’t even try to guess, unless you’re infinitely better at these things than I am! This film also features one of the most deliciously morbid folksingers you’ll ever want to hear; a perfect accompaniment to the chilly goings-on in Violent Midnight. And, oh … a great-looking print on the DVD that I recently watched, from the good folks at Dark Sky.
Not to be confused with the 1973 Vincent Price/Diana Rigg movie Theatre of Blood, Samuel Gallu’s Theatre of Death (1966) gives us the story of a serial killer in modern-day Paris, who stabs victims and drains their blood (kind of like a 20th century Jacques the Ripper). The director of the local Theatre of Death, a Grand Guignol-type of entertainment, falls under suspicion, and, as played by that former neck nosher himself, “Mr. Tall, Dark and Gruesome,” Christopher Lee, is is easy to see why. This sneaky, tyrannical, egomaniacal, Svengali-like, mesmerizing petty dictator is one intimidating personage indeed, and a likely suspect, to say the least. Anyway, I must admit that this little film has been stylishly shot and directed, handsomely produced, and well acted by one and all. However, it is also somewhat static, never especially scary or suspenseful, and certainly suffers when Lee’s character mysteriously disappears halfway through. Still, it does somehow manage to hold the viewer’s attention, although I’m still a trifle puzzled as to WHY the killer decided to go on a sudden homicidal spree, as well as a few other loose ends. To the film’s credit, though, that killer’s identity DOES come as something of a surprise (well, it did for me, anyway, but I’ve always been lousy at guessing this kind of thing). Yes, despite that gruesome title, and Mr. Lee’s presence, this film IS more of a mystery thriller than a horror picture. Oh, and one other thing: An 11-minute interview with Mr. Lee makes for just one of the many fine extras on the crisp-looking DVD that I just watched.
