I enjoyed last week’s column enough that I decided to extend it a bit. I would now like to know which fantasy characters you’d like to sit and sip a brew with?
I’ve had a harder timer choosing a character than choosing an author. My initial thoughts went towards Logen Nine Fingers from Joe Abercrombie’s FIRST LAW TRILOGY, but Greg pointed out that drinking with Logen might not end well if he were to get too drunk and and bring out his more violent alter-ego, The Bloody Nine.
So I’ve settled on Harry Dresden from Jim Butcher’s THE DRESDEN FILES. I would love to hear about his adventures that are not in print. Plus, I would like to try the craft brew they serve at Harry’s favorite watering hole, McAnally’s Pub.
Let me know which characters you think you’d like to chat with and you’ll have a chance to choose a book from our stacks.
Fantasy. I don’t think of myself as a fantasy fan, but once I start pondering the list gets long.
Lupe dy Cazaril of Curse of Chalion would be one choice. I suspect it would be educational and thoughtful.
Then there’s Locke Lamora. I suspect the stories he could tell would bend my little brain, make me fall down laughing and educate me all at once.
Then there’s Jaime from P.C. Hodgell’s works. Though I suspect she doesn’t drink much. Still, it would interesting in the sitting next to a nuke way.
Is there anyone else? Probably, but I can’t think of them right now.
So which do I go with? Locke. And I’ll hold onto my wallet with both hands and paid the bartender in advance.
I’d have a beer with Atticus O’Sullivan, as seen one post down. ;)
Seems like Tyrion is a pretty easy choice.
1. Severian
2. Fafhrd
3. Elric
Vlad Taltos from Steven Brust’s Dragaeran books, Miles and Aral Vorkosigan (Lois McMaster Bujold) and (for entirely different reasons) Phedre from the Kushiel series.
1. CONAN!!!!
2. Whirrun of Bligh, a.k.a. Cracknut from Abercrombie’s The Heroes and his short, The Fools Job from Swords and Dark Magic
3. Gemmell’s Druss the Legend
(If Morlock Ambrose from the series by James Egne wasn’t an recovering alcoholic, he would be in my list of drinking buddies.)
Shame on you, Stefan.
What? I have an interest in tattoos! That marque looks fascinating!
–Harry Dresden
–Not fantasy, it’s scifi, but Y.T. from Snowcrash (except we’d have to have coffee, or I’d have to buy because I’m pretty sure she’s under-age).
–I think Harper Blaine and her witch mentor friend would both be great fun at a Girls’ Night Out.
I’d have a beer with Sam Vimes
@Stefan- good call. I’m a tattoo enthusiast myself, and in tattoos, like any of the visual arts, the canvas itself is huge element in the beauty of the piece. ;)
I will confess that some of my desire to have a beer with Atticus is for the eye-candy factor. I mean, look at those covers! ;) But I’m also secretly hoping he smuggles his dog into the pub, like he does sometimes in the books. I want to meet Oberon!
1: Gandalf
2: Tyrion Lannister
3: Mat Cauthon
4: Kvothe
Sandy–Sam Vimes would be awesome to drink with! Except we’d get interr!)upted with night watch work. (Maybe Vetinari would show up
@Tim- I thought about Tyrion too, but then again, I think we might clash after a few rounds and come to blows. We’re too much alike: short, sarcastic, and smart-@$$es, who like to drink too much.
Kelly, if we’re going to invite eye-candy, how about Joscelin? He may only drink water, but that’s fine.
I’m all for inviting Joscelin! :D And I’m sure Atticus won’t complain about the resultant surplus beer.
My first choice is actually a duo – Locke Lamora and Jean Tannen. Though I’d have to keep a tight grip on my purse, for sure.
Second, Kvothe from the Kingkiller Chronicles. Love that guy.
I’d dearly love to go have a beer in Charles de Lint’s Newford and have a round of drinks with Jilly Coopercorn and Christy & Geordie Riddell.
After all, I’ve spent already too much time in the Realms having virtual drinks with many of the characters therein.
Steven Schend
I’d like to have a beer with Lord Foul the Despiser.
Wow, Rich. That’s one I wasn’t expecting to hear!
