Welcome to the third installment of Rename This Horrible Cover!
This week, I invite you to feast your eyes on this beauty.
Isn’t this a spectacularly bizarre cover? Is that a dog? A hell hound? A lion with mange? What exactly is that large ominous thing? And how is it both behind the man and in front of him at the same time? I’m so confused.
So dear readers, I turn to you. What’s a better name for this cover? I submit “Lord of the Fading Lion Breath.”
Every month we feature a new cover and your job is twofold:
1. Suggest a new title for the featured cover.
2. Suggest a fantasy cover you would like us to retitle for the next month. (Link to it on Amazon or elsewhere.)
You must do both parts to be eligible to win. The winner for retitling the cover will get the featured book for our giveaway (or may choose from the stacks). The winner of the book I pick for the next month’s cover will get to choose a book from our stacks.
Dear readers, it’s up to you now. What should we title this cover art?
Our featured giveaway this week is a copy of Lori Devoti’s Amazon Queen.
Looks like a panther to me, actually. Frankly, I’m far more interested in what those little sparklies are that are drifting all around the man’s hands.
Powdered vampire?
(Having read the book, Beth is right. It’s a tairen, which is sort of a giant flying panther with magic powers. And that guy there is a Fey king who has the rare gift of being able to transform into one. It’s Better Than It Sounds–that series is a guilty pleasure of mine!) And I imagine the sparklies are just supposed to represent magic, kind of like the sickly green glow some other books have. :-))
How about “See What Happenz when I Don’t Get Mah Cheezburger?”
(Oh, I forgot to mention that the giant flying panthers breathe fire, but that’s probably evident from the cover.)
Giant flying panthers that breathe fire!?!?!?
Holy Ravioli. I think I need to put that on my TBR list. Even if only because I have to know if you’re pulling my leg.
Well, how do you like romance? They’re really, really romancey. I like them, but YMMV.
How about 10 Simple Steps To Train Your Pet
Here’s my suggestion for next month’s cover

Flying Flaming Fairie Panthers: A day in the life of Sigfried and Roy’
Justin, you win the Internets. I had thought of Siegfried and Roy but couldn’t come up with a way to incorporate them.
For what it’s worth, I think the “Kendo Queen” cover of the giveaway book is just about as bad as the other one. All it needs is a “Whoosh!” sound effect.
The lord of the hellish halitosis
oops forgot to list a cover to rename – Soul Catcher (The Outsider Series)

I hate these covers with every fiber of my being. Drizzt looks like a balding old geezer…with a %$&$@ purple spider floating by….my god what was the artist thinking.
I forgot to mention that van_pham suggested the book that we retitled this week, so he wins a book of his choice off of our stacks. Contact justin within five days to claim your prize! Congratulations!
Oh, here’s one of my “favorites.” The cover of Child of Saturn by Teresa Edgerton. The book is actually pretty good–sort of an Arthurian story with the serial numbers filed off–but the cover has bugger-all to do with the plot. My Amazon review mentions that the cat is the only accurate thing about it. Not that you can even *see* the cat in this scan.

May I also suggest this cover for Interview with the Vampire? This is a paperback edition from the late seventies, which I picked up at a convention because it cracked me up and was about two bucks.

Justin, I think that might be the very worst of the early Drizzt covers. I’d guess the artist was thinking “what the hell is a Drow?” I mean, it had to be that. Who the heck would whitewash a Drow, otherwise?
He looks like the Sorcerer from Fantasia. I think he’s making a withering glare at Mickey Mouse. (Drizzt, I mean. Not the Fading Lands fellow.)
Trying for the retitling: Hell’s Magical Breathe
Another book to retitle: The Spirit Len’s By Carol Breg

Hmmm, how about “101 Cures for your Cat’s Halitosis”?
My suggestion for a new title:

Wow, Kieran. Is that a book you have on your shelf? That cover is … really… horrible. Just horrible. Wow.
Kieran wins!
Please contact Justin within 5 days. If you don’t want Amazon Queen, you can choose a different book from our stacks.
Yay! I won! I never win!
I actually do own a copy of that book – and actually the internal artwork is brilliant. It just doesn’t work so well in colour.
