It’s that time of year again; full of optimism and champagne, we set a great list of goals for ourselves. Gyms, exercise machines sales reps and diet programs do gangbuster business the first two months of the year.
I take the easy way out and make reading resolutions. Here are mine for 2016:
- I resolve to make my writing a priority.
- I resolve to delve deeper into the sub-genre of Military SF.
- I resolve to go to more conventions.
I’ve already registered for Northern California’s small and dynamic FogCon in March, and WorldCon in August. Look how well I’m doing!
How did I do on last year’s? Well, pretty well on the Mil-SF resolution, I think, and I read several good books on literary criticism, but I failed completely on reading Mervyn Peake’s GORMENGHAST trilogy. Do I put it back on the list of this year’s resolutions? Hmmm…
Tell us what your goals are, and (if you want to) how you did on 2015’s resolutions.
I didn’t have specific reading goals for 2015, other than to read as much as I could and review it! For this year, I want to read more works by people of color, and more short fiction. I’ve already read Kai Ashante Wilson’s Sorcerer of the Wildeeps, and lots of short fiction, so yay me! *pats own back*
And always, ever, I need to write more.
I got half way though WoT last year, so I want to finish that series this year. I also want to read more of my TBR stack and stop worrying about new releases. Read what I want when I want and stop worring about release dates.
That sounds like a great reading goal!
Thanks! I think so. I need to read for me, like I did before my blog.
I want to get back into a review groove, to read more of my TBR, and also to go to conventions! I’ll also be at WorldCon, as well as my usual Archon in the fall.
concerted efforts to
same prioritization of my writing and try to get back to seriously writing every day
read more books off my TBR shelves in a month than I buy that month (to give myself a sense of accomplishing something I decided to start plucking thin books off the TBR to start)
read more with my son (was doing well on this until this past year)
read more poetry (this worked last year)
Already registered for Worldcon/MidAmericon in KC and World Fantasy in Columbus, so think that will cover the conventions
Robert Gryn has a new series called The Suns of the End. Fields of Rust is the first volume and it’s fantastic. Great premise and the story really pulled me in! robertgrynbooks.com. I love the tech he brings in and it’s just an great read in the sci-fi realm.
I usually don’t have specific reading goals other than the generic number I plug into goodreads every year.
However, I recently read a memoir which is way outside of my normal reading and I liked it. I think I’m going to try and expand my reading horizons by reading at least a couple of books that don’t fall in the f/sf/m genres that I mostly stick to.
I had a set of very specific goals about what books I wanted to read and what books I wanted to reread, and I . . . read none of them. Didn’t cross a single thing off the list. But that’s okay, because now all I have to do is change “2015” to “2016” in the title, and I’m all done!
I’m still working on finishing up (or catching up with) all the series I’ve started. I hope to complete that this year. Also, I want to read Octavia Butler. That’s pretty much it….
You’ve been doing so well with the series, Kat.
My goal is to work through more of my TBR.
To put a higher priority on non-fiction.
To put down a book when I realize I’m not enjoying it.
To use my local library more. Including the ILL service.
Attend at least one of the local cons here in Houston or nearby.
I need to utilize my local library more too. Our library system is good and the local librarians are wonderful people.
I have three:
1. Read a minimum 40 books
2. At least 10 of them must be by female authors
3. Read 2 books I already own for every 1 new book I read
Wow, REG, you’re going deep.
1. Reach my goal of 75 books read (or more) this year.
2. Read mostly books from my 3000+ book home library.
3. Read one non-fiction title a month.
4. READ MORE!
Good luck to all on your resolutions!
According to my Goodreads account, I read 169 books last year (and no, I don’t have a life.) I think maybe my goal for this year should be to slow down and enjoy each book more, rather than race through so that I can get to the next one as soon as possible.
That should be my resolution too.
