As you know, we’re constantly adding fantasy authors to our site and our eventual goal is to review each and every one of them. We’re up to 994 authors today — nearly 1000 fantasy authors! Don’t worry, we’ve got more to add, but we thought it’d be fun to make a contest of it (and to make you do some of the work for us — heh heh.). So, for today’s Thoughtful Thursday, Dear Reader, your task is this:
Pick the next 6 authors who should be added to our menu above. The commenter whose choices we like best will win a hardback copy of one of our very favorite books: To Ride Hell’s Chasm by Janny Wurts (who created our logo, by the way). Read our reviews of To Ride Hell’s Chasm on our Wurts page. (Or, if for some strange reason you don’t want that book, choose from our stacks).
Here are some tips:
- SIX only. And, obviously, the author can’t be already in our menu.
- We’re kinda picky about genres. Yeah, you see a review of LKH today, but it’s hard to ignore her. We really try to stick mostly with authors who write fantasy — not erotica-disguised-as-fantasy. We’re aware that there are plenty of paranormal romance authors who we don’t have on the site. The focus must be on fantasy, not romance.
- Same with YA paranormal romances.
- We’re kind of picky about publishers, too. They should be SFWA-approved.
- New fantasy authors who have been picked up by big houses such as Tor, Ace, Roc, Orbit, Gollancz, etc are perfect choices. Books should be available on Amazon, though, so we know the deal’s been done.
We can’t wait to see who you pick!
Here is my list. Some older books that I have enjoyed and some new authors that I have seen are debuting. This was a tough task.
Patrick Vanner
Harry Harrison
Dan Simmons
Edgar Rice Burroughs
Karen Azinger
Anthony Huso
Here is my list .
Andrew Fox
Greg Bear
Katherine Eliska Kimbriel
Ray Bradbury
Richard Laymon
S.P. Somtow
Pity you limit your choices to SFWA-approved publishers. It prevents you from discovering some seriously talented writers. Oh, and the Google Friend Connect was in the bottom left corner of my screen. :-)
Erin M Evans
SP Somtow
Neal Stephenson
David Gaider
F Paul Wilson
Bernard Cornwell
Zumayabooks,
We make some exceptions to SFWA, but it was an easy way to curb the flood of requests that we used to get. Unfortunately, we just couldn’t handle them all and we had to draw a line somewhere. There are many good indie writers (you’ll find some on this site), but before we instituted that policy, we received a lot of review requests for books that were, quite honestly, just awful. I’m sorry to say so, but that has been our experience.
The Google thing should be in both locations — top right and bottom left.
Thanks!
Kat
Darrell Schweitzer
Greg Bear
Frederic S. Durbin
Lafcadio Hearn
Howard Pyle
Manly Wade Wellman
Not sure if they qualify for the contest, but they’re all authors whose fantasies I’ve enjoyed.
The only one I can come up with is:
Larry Correia – Monster Hunter International – urban fantasy?
Which I purchased, and then before reading it, I loaned to my mother who let one of my brothers read it at Thanksgiving, he gave it to my other brother who took it home with him to finish. Then his son started reading it. They finally bought their own copy and are sending mine to my daughter at college. I gave up and bought another copy the other day and will hopefully get a chance to read it soon.
sgiden,
Choose another in place of Tamara Siler Jones. (She’s under Jones).
Thanks!
Kat
I looked under S. Please add Greg Bear to my list.
Thanks
sgiden, I edited your list and made that change. Thanks!
You’re all coming up with some good ones — I know this was a hard task!
I’m not writing to enter the contest; I only read ebooks now, but ran across The Iron King by Julie Kagawa; I would have bet money that I was led to it by your site as almost all of the new writers that I have been discovering lately are driven by FanLit reviews, but to my astonishment, I found this one on my own. It is a YA Fantasy and although I’m only 50% complete, would love to see a review from FanLit.

Or, where do you live?
Israel
Wow. It was really hard to pick a winner for this because there were so many great suggestions!
To Ride Hell’s Chasm goes to hoopmanjh who alerted us to a couple of authors who we were completely unaware of who should definitely be on our site. Hoopmanjh, Please send me your address at the contact link
But thanks to each one of you, because we will definitely be using your suggestions. (“Or”, we are actually in the processes of adding yours because they are new and have books coming out this year, so they’re in the current catalogs). Many others that have been mentioned will also be added. If you think of any more authors who we need to include, please add them here. We’ll find them. Thanks!
Thanks! And for good measure, I just thought of another: Michael Reaves, particularly for The Shattered World and its sequel The Burning Realm.
Oh! And also James Stoddard — his High House and False House are particularly fine.
just noticed 2 more missing who have very recent releases
Karin Lowachee – Gaslight Dogs, Orbit, March 30
Lavie Tidhar – The Bookman, Angry Robot, already out in the UK, soon in the US
