I completely agree with Bill’s comments about Icefall. This book conveyed a perfect, and menacing, sense of mood, its pacing was perfect and in many places the writing was lyrical. It was a different take on this type of story, more commonly seen in mysteries. It is aimed at young adults but old adults should read it too.
I can’t remember the last time I read a YA novel, but I have to admit that Icefall does look interesting.

I say next year we do this Dec 1 rather than Jan 1 so I can put these on my wish list and get them all for Christmas. So let’s see, I’ve read ten, I already have five on my shelf–yeah, my family can get the rest; that’s reasonable.
Greg, I really can’t say enough good about Icefall. Marion’s comparison to a mystery is a good one. But even if it doesn’t turn out to be your cup of tea (or arsenic), I think at the least you won’t feel you’ve read a YA so much as a well-crafted book by a very good writer, just one that didn’t click for you.
And Breadcrumbs is just fun for anyone well-versed in fantasy/faerie as Kelly said
Great list – I see about a half dozen reads that are on my TBR list, along with a few that I’ll be adding.
So glad to see Daniel Abraham’s book on the list. It was great! I also thought that Carol Berg’s The Soul Mirror was excellent. Her best yet!
Nice list!I am really interested in ” A Canticle for Leibowitz” I had’nt known about this one before. I had been putting off Reamde, I’ve got to get to it. Also Brave new Worlds piques my sensibilities, I’ll be putting it on my to read list. Most of the rest of the stuff I already have on my TBR pile I’ll just move em up so I get to em sooner.
Icefall and Breadcrumbs are now both in my cart on Amazon, so it looks like you folks have given a couple of authors a small New Year’s Eve present. A few others from this list are on there, too, including Prince of Thorns and Among Thieves. I don’t know if I’m sayinig a good thing or a bad thing about myself when I note that many, if not most, of the others are already on my library shelves. (Well, yes, I do know: it’s a good thing about me that I love books, read books and buy books. And I’ll live forever, because you can’t die until you’ve read all your books — that IS how it works, isn’t it?)
Terry- “you can’t die until you’ve read all your books” I think you’re right. That’s probably why I’m still alive today, well that and I drink coffee everyday. :)
